How to find Serenity (Part I)

Many people fall into drug, alcohol or any other sort of addiction because they cannot cope with the stress of life. This desperation to find an escape from the hectic and dull life routine takes them into the wrong corners, like drugs, alcohol and cigarettes. Once starting to abuse these substances, they feel great at the beginning; they feel these substances will take away all of their troubles and mixed feelings. Substance abuse gives high to its users that they desperately start seeking once they are addicted. When the addiction gets worse, it takes control over the addict’s mind and actions. As a result, the user’s personality changes drastically and, also, financial life starts going downhill because of the dependence on the substance to feel better.

Instead of falling prey to addiction, three people can search for different ways to cope. One of those ways is finding serenity. Serenity can be defined as the state where the person finds peace within himself or herself. So how can someone achieve serenity in their lives?

 

Serenity Prayer 

It is a good way to get immersed in the state of serenity and find an extremely pleasant way to boost the recovery process from any addiction. It gives you understanding of acceptance, happiness and mutual help.

A great example of it was written by Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971). It states:

 

God grant me the serenity

to accept the things I cannot change;

courage to change the things I can;

and wisdom to know the difference.

 

Living one day at a time;

enjoying one moment at a time;

accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;

taking, as He did, this sinful world

as it is, not as I would have it;

trusting that He will make all things right

if I surrender to His Will;

that I may be reasonably happy in this life

and supremely happy with Him

forever in the next.

Amen.

 

Proper Sleeping Schedule 

We are not capable of clear and rational thinking if we are sleep deprived. Adults are required to have at least 7-8 hours of sleep daily. It is of vital importance to develop good sleep habits. There is nothing wrong with going to bed at 9 p.m. Moreover, your favorite night TV shows or Social Media activity are not nearly as important as your serenity and mental stability!

 

Practice Gratitude 

Early morning, before getting out of bed, think of what things and which people you are grateful for having in your life. Moreover, acknowledge the most basics that you possess: a job, good relationships, your home, health.

Besides, it is important to continue the gratitude and kindness line throughout the day. If someone smiles at you on the street, smile back. If someone greets you, always give it back in a kind way. If you avoid an accident, give thanks to God for letting you out of trouble.

 

Do Not Be Afraid of Challenges 

Since the birth, we are entitled to challenge and be challenged. Through challenges you discover your creativity, figure out the best solutions and solve problems. They are what makes you move forward in life, get experience and learn. Challenges lead you to self-development and improvement.
